Adding symbolic information to picture models: definitions and properties
2005
AbstractIn the paper we propose extensions of some picture models, such as colored, drawn and pixel pictures. Such extensions are conceived by observing that a picture may embed more information than the shape, such as colors, labels, etc., which can be represented by a symbol from an alphabet and can be associated to segments, points or pixels. New interesting issues derived from the introduction of symbols will be investigated together with some complexity and decidability questions for the proposed extensions.

Spatio-Chromatic Adaptation via Higher-Order Canonical Correlation Analysis of Natural Images
2014
Independent component and canonical correlation analysis are two general-purpose statistical methods with wide applicability. In neuroscience, independent component analysis of chromatic natural images explains the spatio-chromatic structure of primary cortical receptive fields in terms of properties of the visual environment. Canonical correlation analysis explains similarly chromatic adaptation to different illuminations. But, as we show in this paper, neither of the two methods generalizes well to explain both spatio-chromatic processing and adaptation at the same time. We propose a statistical method which combines the desirable properties of independent component and canonical correlat…
Glimpses of the Hereafter in the Late-Medieval Thet Freske Riim
2014
The article analyzes a passage of the narrative poem Thet Freske Riim, one of the few non-legal texts preserved in Old Frisian. The passage in question is a digression describing the Joys of Heaven and the Horrors of Hell, which so far has attracted little attention in the scholarly literature on medieval accounts of the hereafter. The representations of the afterlife and its realms circulating in Medieval Europe draw inspiration from a wide body of both orthodox and apocryphal literature on ecstatic dreams, of which one of the most influential work is the Visio Sancti Pauli or Apocalypse of Paul. The study aims to identify – in the examined passage – themes and features of otherworldly lit…
Cosmological perturbations in extended electromagnetism. General gauge invariant approach
2013
A certain vector-tensor (VT) theory is revisited. It was proposed and analyzed as a theory of electromagnetism without the standard gauge invariance. Our attention is first focused on a detailed variational formulation of the theory, which leads to both a modified Lorentz force and the true energy momentum tensor of the vector field. The theory is then applied to cosmology. A complete gauge invariant treatment of the scalar perturbations is presented. For appropriate gauge invariant variables describing the scalar modes of the vector field (A-modes), it is proved that the evolution equations of these modes do not involve the scalar modes appearing in General Relativity (GR-modes), which are…
The genus Pleurotus in Italy
2015
On the basis of personal observations, herbarium specimens and, data reported in the literature the authors report morphological, ecological and distributive data on Pleurotus taxa from Italy. New descriptions are here provided based on the most distinctive-discriminating eco-morphological characters of twelve Pleurotus taxa.
Royal 19 D I, Bodley 264, BNF fr. 2810, Arsenal 5219). The present article investigates animal and teratological descriptions of theDevisement dou monde. Particularly, Marco Polo’s fauna and its monstrous and marvelous extremes are explored both in the Franco-It…
Īpašības vārdu lietojums produktu aprakstos pārtikas uzņēmumu interneta mājas lapās
2019
2017
In the works written in the last period of his life, Professor Witold Mańczak often emphasized the need to formulate a criterion of truth in linguistics. He pursued it in textual reality (in “what is written and what is said”) and in statistical, frequentative and quantitative data which describe it. On the margin of this search, this author shares his own experiences in the field of ethnolinguistics, related to attempts to determine the actual (and, in this sense, true) ontological status of analyzed objects. He postulates that the diversification of the objects of analysis should be complemented by an adequate diversification of how their names are recorded in the narration, i.e. by a pre…
Explaining information technology users’ ways of mitigating technostress
2017
Technostress refers to the inability of an individual to deal with information technology (IT) in a healthy manner. Researchers, practitioners, and medical professionals have emphasized the omnipresence of technostress and its severe outcomes, including poor well-being and burnout. Despite the importance of the phenomenon, prior research has paid limited attention to how technostress can be mitigated. The few existing studies examine organizational mitigation mechanisms, but we could not find any studies that focus on individual IT users’ own ways of mitigating technostress outside of work. To address the research gap, we conducted a qualitative study to uncover users’ ways of mitigating te…
